As most of you may know October is known as National Breast Cancer Awareness month. October was the chosen month where many people take the initiative to raise awareness about the importance of
detecting this deadly disease at an early stage. This disease has been able to claim the life of many individuals, young and old. There are over 3 million survivors today whom have survived this vicious disease. Women are encouraged to talk to their doctors, be aware of family history, and get their mammograms completed every 2 years, especially if they are between the ages of 40-49.
During October you can expect to see an array of pink ribbons. The pink ribbons are worn by many
Individuals; young, old, women, and men in order to show their moral support for women with breast cancer. The pink ribbon was adducted and became the international symbol of breast cancer awareness, but the Komen "running ribbon" is strictly used by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. I wear my ribbon proudly every day as a charm attached to my Pandora's bracelet.
Over the weekend I had the opportunity to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure here in Nashville. It was one of the most humbling experiences I've had. I lost 2 of my Aunts, whom were very close to me to breast cancer. I lost one of my aunts the summer before my senior year of high school and the other in my early 20's and it was such a devastating time for me. Now that I am older and able to handle the pain, I use that pain to give me strength to help bring awareness to other women about this disease.
Delta Dental, 92.Q, Mcdonalds, Kirklands, and Duncn Donuts amongst many other companies were sponsors for Race for the Cure. Many companies had amazing giveaways such as; totes, coffee mugs, donuts, free cups of coffee, and raffles. The open green field was filled with supporters, breast cancer survivors, some still battling the disease, and some people even had their dogs dressed in all shades of pink to come together in unity to support this cause. The race began promptly at 9:00AM and you had
the choice of walking the 1 Mile or 5k race. Some people ran, some people jogged, and some people walked while even pushing their bundles of joy in their strollers across the finish line. The breast cancer survivors that decided to walked crossed the finish line were greeted with a fresh pink carnation and a medal, for their "fight" not only for pushing through the finish line but for fighting that mighty war of breast cancer and surviving!
Now that October has come to an end we encourage you to continue to help support this cause the entire year and for a life time. The Susan G. Komen goal is, by 2026 to have the number of deaths related to breast cancer reduced by 50%. Let us come together in unity to fundraise in order to help research development and help the Susan G. Komen reach their goal. If you're not a fan of exercise, that is okay there so many more opportunities you have to volunteer. There are a host of events that are held yearly that you can volunteer for. The Susan G. Komen foundation also offer internships throughout out the year as well. Last but not least, if you don't find any events that intrest you, how about, get creative and host your own event and make a donation to the foundation? The list goes on as far as the opportunities you have in order to help support this cause.
